Flock's Guide to Packing

Updated: Aug 9, 2018

We asked Dani McDonald, owner of Flock, to give us her tips for what everyone should be packing for their New England getaways.

This summer I'm sticking around my home on the south shore for the most part because it's just too beautiful to leave at this time of year. However, we did take a long weekend getaway to Martha's Vineyard, which is just one of my favorite places in the summer.

As many of us with kids know, packing light doesn't really seem like an option. To make things a little easier on myself, I pack my suitcase with some staple pieces that I can make into some great outfits. My must haves include a lightweight straw bag. Big enough for my little one's snacks, sunscreen, and beach essentials but lightweight enough to carry around the island. In that bag are a pair of my favorite Quay sunglasses. A great price point so I don't mind if they get sandy or left on my beach towel while we are swimming. For jewelry, I wear my gold Jenny Bird hoops and layer some Five and two necklaces with my Kris Nations "mama" necklace. For outfits, my Unpublished denim shorts are a no brainer, as well as my favorite white pullover hoodie from Free People for cool beach nights. I always pack a few dresses and rompers which are easy and breezy for the hot summer days. My favorites this summer are the Gentle Fawn striped tank dress, Show Me Your Mumu Dunaway Jumpsuit and For Love and Lemons Hermosa Eyelet swing dress. All of these pieces look great with my Unpublished denim jacket thrown over them and easily transition from day to night. With just these key pieces and accessories I can pack light but still have all of my favorite things for our little trip to the island.

SEL: Why is Flock is named Flock?

Dani: The name Flock was inspired by a song that I love. When I thought more about it, I liked that the name could mean many things, like creating our own "Flock" from my vision.

SEL: Why did you choose to open in the South End?

Dani: I had been living in the south end for years and just love the neighborhood. I wanted to be able to contribute to such an amazing community of people. Stop by and say hi to Dani and her Flockettes at Flock, 274 Shawmut Ave. They offer a fun selection of gifts and cards in addition to their gorgeous clothing & accessories.
